Yesterday marked my long ride ever, coming in at approximately 139 miles as a part of the Rapha Gentlemen’s Race. We headed out to the beach (Lincoln City) on Friday evening and stayed in a suite at the Inn at Spanish Head thanks to team president Jim who served as sugar daddy for the evening.  [...]

A Day in the Sun

Posted By Adam Edgerton on March 12th, 2009

Jessie and I set out this morning going west with the intention of finding something interesting to hike.  We had our eyes on Kings Mountain, but figured there would be snow on the trail.  We decided to forge on in spite of the snow, and I’m glad we did.  The trail is 5 miles total, but it’s 2500 feet up in 2.5 miles on the way to the top and all the way down on the way back.

Most of the trail is in the forest, but it finally opens up near the top.  A strong breeze (ok, wind) would have made it a cold day were it not for the sunshine.

The views from the top at above 3000 feet were stunning.  Looking towards the coast:

And back East towards Portland (with Mt. hood in the distance):

3226, to be exact.

The way up took an hour and a half or so and the way down about an hour for a nice long hike that turned into a good leg workout.

With some time to kill, we decided to head to the coast briefly, where the day continued to be great.  We stopped in Tillamook at Blue Heron French Cheese Company.  Here, Jessie pondered which of the umpteen varieties of brie was the one worth purchasing.

We also sampled dozens of jams, jellies, mustards, and spreads.  Ms. Cookie offered up a paper.

And then we did something that I can’t believe it took me 23 years to do.  Perhaps my parents knew better when I was a kid.  It was just too much of a good thing:

I was completely giddy looking at more cheddar cheese than I have ever seen in my life.  Not to mention it was incredibly fascinating to see the entire cheese-making process from vats to blocks to cutting to weighing to packaging.  See those big blocks in the bottom right corner?  40 Pounds each.

I count 80 pounds shy of one ton of cheddar cheese in this picture.  At the speed the line was moving, this would be in two pound packaged blocks in perhaps 15 minutes time.

Then we partook in way more than a few free samples.

I had to indulge myself:

I would go there every day if I could.  Seriously.

We had just enough time left to take a quick drive out to Cape Meares and check out the ocean on a perfect sunny afternoon.

Overall an awesome day.  Sun, snow, scenery, the ocean, cheese, cheese, cheese, cheese…

Nice 12 of 12 set Adam, except you have three too many. Looks like a really fun day…a lot more interesting than mine!

Mom

Sorry we deprived you these 23+ years. We were more focused on agates and the ocean the times we were thru Tillamook. You sound like you died and went to heaven!

Ah, I guess today is the 12th. Tomorrow is Friday the 13th, which makes 2 months in a row there’s been a Friday the 13th. That doesn’t happen often.
